Suubi Health Center–Best in the Region

It's only been a few weeks since the Suubi Health Center opened its doors, yet so much has happened! Our newest Global Advocate, Ashleigh, has done a tremendous job and has already raised over $20,000! She arrived in Uganda at the beginning of September and wrote to me with an update:
Ashleigh having some photo fun with Charles, the passion fruit expert.
"Suubi is already known as the referral clinic for the region - so 56,000 people are sent to Suubi to receive the highest level of care. People are leaving the government hospitals in Iganga and Jinja to come to Suubi. Imagine that! After only 5 weeks. They are saving lives everyday. A beautiful baby boy was born the other day and if the mother had not come to Suubi and instead used a traditional birth attendant she would have died because it was a complicated birth."
The health workers are so committed to the success of Suubi that when they receive a phone call in the middle of the night, they walk to 2km to the health clinic in complete darkness. They know that their response is the difference between life and death. Ashleigh will begin building a community center for the village of Budondo. It will serve as the hub for The Budondo Intercultural Center, where conferences, community meetings and public health trainings can take place. It is also the main sustainability initiative, as it will show soccer matches to the public and can be rented out for weddings, graduation parties and other ceremonies. Another Global Advocate, Hannah, visited Budondo from her project in Tanzania. She took some amazing photos of Suubi's progress. We are so proud of how far we've come, and can't wait to see what the future holds!   Hey Suubi Health Centre in Budondo, Uganda! You're great. Thanks for being available for thousands of people who would never have access to your services without you. Thanks for the three healthy babies your staff delivered in the last month and for the 220 other patients who you have been able to treat since your opening in July. Thanks to your founders the Mukisa family and for their love for their community.

The passionfruits that will be sold to support the work of the Suubi Centre are coming along nicely. 2000 plants planted...according to Charles, the farm manager, thats 3000 kilos of passion a month once the plants are mature, with each kilo sold for around 1.1 usd...minus costs, thats around $3000 per month for the health centre. Passionfruits are so tasty.

This is Sharon, The Suubi Health Centre's pharmacist and nurse. She says "I've always wanted to do this work. I used to tell my mum, 'i want to be a nurse' and now thats what I'm doing. Our work is important because Suubi is unique in the community...there aren't any other easy options for people...we're saving people's lives."
